SANDAKAN: The highly anticipated Borneo Sevens 2025 is set to take place from April 19-20 at Eagles Rugby Club in Sandakan.

Known as one of Asia’s premier rugby tournaments, the event will bring together 17 elite teams from around the world for a weekend of intense competition and cultural celebration.

This year’s edition of the Borneo Sevens is proudly recognised as “The Greenest Sevens in the World,” with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental awareness.

Organisers have committed to a green trajectory, ensuring that all activities align with efforts to preserve Sandakan’s reputation as the Nature City of Sabah.

According to President of Eagles Rugby Club Sandakan cum Organising Chairman of Borneo Sevens 2025, Velayuthan Tan, in addition to the main tournament, several new activities have been introduced to enhance community participation and engagement.

Among the activities is Junior Age-Group Rugby Tournament, a platform for young talents, featuring boys’ and girls’ school teams, starting two days before the main event.

Apart from that, there will also be a Fitness Run which encourages health and wellness among the community and Borneo Carnival, a vibrant showcase of traditional cultural performances and local delicacies.

Marking its 20th edition, the Borneo Sevens has grown into a symbol of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and world-class competition since its inception in 2001, said Vela.

“The tournament continues to attract top teams from Australia, Fiji, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, China, the UAE, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia, further solidifying its place on the Asian and international rugby calendar.

“Beyond competition, the tournament serves as a hub for fostering new friendships, professional networks, and lasting memories among players and rugby enthusiasts,” he said.

With just weeks to go, excitement is building for what promises to be a landmark event in rugby and sports tourism in the region.
