MELAKA: A 12-year-old boy who was found unconscious after falling into a drain in Taman Ayer Keroh Height here died last night.

Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit identified the victim as Muhammad Loqman Afandy. He said the boy died while receiving treatment at Melaka Hospital at 8.09 pm last night.

He said, preliminary investigations revealed that before the incident, the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Ayer Keroh student, his younger brother Muhammad Adam, 10, and two other friends, also aged 10, had gone to play at a drain near their home around 4.30 pm yesterday.

“It was raining at the time, and the current was strong. Muhammad Adam was swept away by the current first. Muhammad Loqman and another friend, known as Yuvanath, attempted to rescue him.

“However, they were also swept away. Meanwhile, another friend was standing slightly farther away from the location,” he said in a statement today.

He said that Adam and Yuvanath later managed to pull themselves to safety, after which Adam went to seek help from a nearby neighbour.

He said that at approximately 5.45 pm, the victim’s mother received a phone call from Adam informing her that his elder brother had been swept away in the drain. The mother then reported the incident.

Christopher said the fire brigade arrived at the scene around 6.10 pm, and Muhammad Loqman was found 20 minutes after the search and rescue operation began.

He added that rescue personnel administered CPR to the victim before rushing him to Melaka Hospital for further treatment.
