THE nation is bracing for continued heavy rainfall across multiple states after the Malaysian Meteorological Department, MetMalaysia, issued prolonged rain warnings expected to remain in force until mid-December.
According to MetMalaysia, a severe-level continuous rain warning is in effect until December 18 for Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang involving Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin, as well as Johor covering Mersing and Kota Tinggi.
“Meanwhile, a continuous rain warning at the alert level, also effective until December 18, involves Perak covering Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar, Pahang including the Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran and Bera, as well as Johor involving Segamat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Bahru,” the department said in a statement.
For Sarawak, MetMalaysia said a continuous rain alert-level warning is in force until December 16, 2025, affecting Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah.
The public has been advised to stay informed through the official MetMalaysia website, the myCuaca mobile application and the department’s official social media channels. Enquiries can also be made via the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
In Kelantan, heightened flood preparations are already under way as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage has deployed seven water pumps, including additional diesel units, to prevent Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s Kota Campus in Pengkalan Chepa from becoming paralysed again amid expectations of a second wave of flooding from Sunday to Wednesday.
UMK vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Arham Abdullah said the university remains on high alert, particularly in flood-prone areas such as Taman Bendahara.
“At present, five electric pumps and two diesel pumps have been prepared, with an additional diesel pump installed to ensure smooth water pumping operations in the event of heavy rain and water accumulation,” he said during a press conference on Sunday.
“These pumps operate automatically when there is heavy rain and water pooling. We will also carry out continuous monitoring together with relevant agencies,” he added.
Earlier, Dr Arham attended the Kampung Angkat Madani programme under UMK, officiated by FELCRA Berhad chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub at the Knowledge Transformation Centre in Bukit Tiu.
He said UMK has also activated its flood operations room as an early precautionary step should conditions worsen during the expected period of heavy rainfall.
The university, he added, has established standard operating procedures that include the possibility of electricity shutdowns and student evacuations if flooding becomes severe and poses safety risks.
“We are fully prepared for the monsoon season, and parents need not worry because the safety and welfare of students are our top priority,” he said.
Dr Arham added that UMK will continue working closely with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and other relevant agencies to ensure the campus remains operational and minimises disruption should the second wave of flooding affect the area. - December 14, 2025
