Brake failure suspected in factory bus crash near Paya Terubong

A SUSPECTED brake failure caused a factory bus carrying 29 workers and a driver to skid off a steep bend near Suria Vista Apartments along Jalan Paya Terubong on Monday morning, leaving six passengers with minor injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 7.24am as the bus was descending from Kampung Jawa towards Paya Terubong following a night shift.

“The accident is believed to have been caused by a problem with the braking system,” said Assistant Director of Operations for the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), John Sagun Francis.

“Firefighters from the Paya Terubong station arrived at the scene at 7.34am,” he said in a statement. “All victims were successfully rescued. Six sustained minor injuries to the face, hands, and legs, while the remaining 24 were unharmed.”

The injured, all Indonesian nationals aged between 22 and 26, were treated on-site before being transferred by Ministry of Health ambulance teams to hospital for further care.

The rescue operation, assisted by police and health officers, concluded at 8.27am after clearance of debris from the site.

Authorities are investigating the incident, which has raised concerns over safety standards in the transport of industrial workers. - August 11, 2025
