A brand new car that was supposed to be handed over to its buyer ended up being detained instead, after it was caught on the road without number plates.

The incident, which was shared by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ), took place last Thursday (Apr 2) during an enforcement operation in Kelang Lama, Kulim.

Stopped during enforcement operation

According to JPJ, the vehicle was being driven by a salesperson at the time it was stopped by enforcement officers.

Upon inspection, officers found that the car did not display any registration number plates at both the front and rear, which is a requirement for all vehicles on Malaysian roads.

Car was already registered with valid insurance

Further checks revealed that the vehicle was not unregistered.

In fact, it had already been properly registered, came with valid insurance, and had an active Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM), commonly known as road tax.

However, despite meeting these requirements, the absence of number plates meant the vehicle was still considered non-compliant with road regulations.

Temporary detention notice issued

As a result, authorities took action and issued a Temporary Detention Notice for the vehicle.

JPJ stressed that displaying valid registration numbers is not optional, and all vehicles must comply with the specifications set under road laws before being driven on public roads.

Dealers and salespersons reminded to comply

JPJ also reminded car dealers and salespersons to ensure that vehicles are fully compliant before being used for any purpose, including road testing, transportation, or delivery to customers.

Failing to do so could result in enforcement action, even if the vehicle is brand new and already registered.
