Violence broke out in Paris overnight ahead of the French Cup final on Friday, with 65 people arrested and six injured, police told L'Equipe, the French sports newspaper, in a story published on Friday.

One person ended up in intensive care with serious head injuries, the report said.

Some 100 fans of OGC Nice, who play RC Lens at 9 pm (1900 GMT) at the Stade de France, gathered near the Canal Saint-Martin, a popular tourist spot, and started a major brawl, the newspaper reported.

Officers intervened and arrested 65 people. They seized bladed weapons and objects used as weapons as well as balaclavas and padded gloves.

The brawl involved hooligans from Nice who were supported by fans from Lille, Nancy and some from Saarbruecken in Germany on the French border, as well as Paris fans, most of whom were former Paris ultras, the paper reported.

Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire condemned the violent attack by Nice fans, some of whom are said to have links to the far-right scene.

"I wish to reaffirm that Paris, true to its history and values, will leave no room for far-right fringe groups to spread their hatred," Gregoire wrote on X.

Some of those injured were in a critical condition

Extensive security measures were put in place for the Cup final at the Stade de France, which has been classified as a high-risk match. More than 2,000 police officers are on duty.
