Brazil's 1970 World Cup champion Brito has died at the age of 86, the Brazilian football federation CBF said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

"Brito left us as one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian football. His contribution during the 1970 World Cup to our third world title will be forever remembered by all of us. May his fighting spirit be an inspiration for our players who will compete at the 2026 World Cup," CBF president Samir Xaud said.

Brito paired up with Piazza to lead the Brazilian defence during the tournament in 1970. While Piazza was known for his technique, Britto was known for his strenghth and physical form.

Brito played 61 games for the national team.

Brazil kick off the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada against Morocco on Saturday.
