Britain to honour Muslim soldiers with new national war memorial

  • Nearly £1 million has been made available to help fund the design and construction of a national Muslim war memorial in England.
  • The memorial will honour the contributions of Muslim people to British war efforts during the First and Second World Wars.
  • Faith and Communities Minister Nesil Caliskan said the memorial aims to ensure the previously overlooked contributions of Muslim soldiers are remembered “for generations”.
  • A competition opens on 10 June for charities, companies, and local authorities in England to propose designs for the memorial.
  • According to the government, at least 400,000 Muslim soldiers fought in the First World War, including Victoria Cross recipient Khudadad Khan.
