Brydon Carse named in Durham side after dropping by England amid investigation

Brydon Carse has been named in the Durham side for the County Championship clash with Gloucestershire after being dropped from the England squad.

Carse was stood down from England’s group for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s after a late-night incident in Derby was referred to the Cricket Regulator.

The fast bowler remains under investigation after being arrested and then de-arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning. Derbyshire Police is looking into “allegations of assault” in connection with an incident, with no clarity over what part – if any – Carse had in the alleged assault.

The 31-year-old was nonetheless named in Durham’s XI as they continue their promotion push at the Riverside.

He enjoyed a perfect start on Thursday morning at Chester-le-Street, striking in his first over of the day against Gloucestershire and adding a second breakthrough in his initial new-ball spell of two for 33.

Carse’s sixth ball of the match knocked out Joe Phillips’ middle stump and he also clean bowled Miles Hammond.

Former England captain Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, who were both present in footage of Carse in handcuffs, have also been selected for the Division Two clash.

Carse has made 58 appearances for England across formats, and won the last of his 14 Test caps in the final Ashes encounter in January.

The start of England’s Test against Pakistan has, meanwhile, been delayed by rain, with the toss not taking place as scheduled at 10.30am BST. The hosts are thought to be likely to name an unchanged team after going 1-0 up with a commanding innings win at Headingley last week.
