MANILA, Philippines — The Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) posthumously conferred its highest honor to Scout Chris Lorenz T. Fabian, the student who sacrificed his life while trying to protect his classmates during the deadly shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
The BSP awarded Fabian, 16, the Gold Gallantry and Heroism Award, recognizing his “exceptional courage” and selfless act during the June 22, 2026 attack where he and two other students were killed and injured several more.
International Commissioner Mark Roy L. Boado and Deputy Secretary General David Dominic M. Lanuza presented the award to Fabian’s family on June 26.
The organization said the recognition was a tribute to Fabian’s bravery and the way he embodied the values of the Scout Oath by putting the safety of others above his own.
Fabian, who was a Boy Scout, was among the students caught in the shooting inside the school campus after two armed minors allegedly opened fire, according to authorities.
Witnesses said Fabian helped protect his classmates by attempting to stop the armed attacker from entering their classroom.
The BSP described the Gold Gallantry and Heroism Award as its most sacred tribute for Scouts who display extraordinary courage in the face of danger.
The organization also expressed its condolences to the Fabian family and said the Scouting community would continue to honor his courage and service.
“The brotherhood of Scouting bows its head. One final, enduring Scout Salute to you, Scout Chris Lorenz T. Fabian. Your name is written in honor, your courage is eternal, and you will never, ever be forgotten,” the BSP said.
