KUALA LUMPUR – The government has allocated RM580 million under Budget 2026 to boost Malaysia’s sports development, with funds channelled into elite performance programmes, facility upgrades, and preparations for hosting major regional events.
Tabling the budget in the Dewan Rakyat today, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the investment is intended to elevate national sporting achievements while building a more inclusive ecosystem.
“The spirit of championship must be kept alive as we strive for greater success. Therefore, the development of national sports will be further strengthened with a significantly increased allocation,” Anwar said.
A large portion of the funding will go to enhancing elite performance, particularly through the Road to Gold programme — Malaysia’s flagship initiative to secure its first Olympic gold medal.
The budget also allocates resources for preparations to host the 2027 SEA Games and Asean Para Games, while continuing support for para-athletes and athletes with hearing impairments.
“We will ensure that our athletes, able-bodied and disabled, receive the resources and support they need to perform at the highest level,” Anwar added.
Beyond athlete development, the government will channel funds to maintain and upgrade youth and sports facilities nationwide, including school fields under the Education Ministry, to improve grassroots access to sport.
To encourage greater private sector participation, Anwar announced that organisations approved by the Inland Revenue Board will be permitted to allocate part of their income towards sports development.
