Budget 2027 allocates over RM130 million to support Malaysia’s film, music and creative industries, including incentives and animation development.

PETALING JAYA: Cinema tickets and local theatre performances in the Federal Territories will be fully exempted from entertainment duty from 2027, with the government urging state administrations to adopt similar measures to support local creative talents.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government had allocated more than RM130 million to support the local film, music and creative content industries.

The allocation includes incentives for local and international film and animation productions filmed in Malaysia, with additional incentives for works that showcase Malaysian culture and national identity.

The government will also strengthen the local animation ecosystem, targeting the creation of 20 new intellectual properties and the commercialisation of Malaysian characters on the international stage.

Anwar said the creative industry played an important role in raising the country’s profile, creating jobs and bringing Malaysian stories to global audiences.

He also stressed the need for the Malay language to advance alongside technological developments in the era of artificial intelligence.
