KUALA LUMPUR – Umno must focus entirely on rebuilding its own internal strength rather than relying on the goodwill of external political allies, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, fondly known as Tok Mat to party members, said on Saturday.
Speaking during the winding-up session of the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre (WTC), Mohamad reflected on the party's historical endurance through severe political turbulence.
"Despite being destroyed and embroiled in internal fights, Umno remains standing today.
"Do not rely on the mercy of others, do not rely on other parties," he said.
He called on delegates to fortify the organisation from within to withstand upcoming political battles and ensure the party cannot be easily undermined by rivals.
"Build internal strength, make it a fortress against whatever we will face. That way, people cannot overturn us," he said.
Addressing the delicate dynamics of political cooperation and power-sharing, Mohamad cautioned delegates against becoming overly comfortable with external alliances, reminding them of past betrayals.
"They will always view us as taking up space, but we have literally experienced disappointment just as we have been let down before.
"A basic understanding is enough, but do not forget to build our own strength," he said.
