- Prime minister Andy Burnham has said every possible measure is being considered to ease driving costs, including potentially halting a planned fuel duty rise in January.
- Diesel prices at British pumps reached a record high of 199.53p per litre, with the RAC warning that filling an average family car now costs nearly £110.
- Describing the situation as an energy crisis driven by the US-Iran war, Mr Burnham called the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz an urgent international priority.
- Ahead of chancellor John Healey's Budget on 28 October, Mr Burnham highlighted cost-of-living relief, including zero VAT on electricity bills from October and a £2 bus fare cap in 2027.
- At the Labour conference, Mr Burnham also unveiled plans for a new Water Bill to allow public ownership of failing water firms and the creation of GB Grid.
