Whether it is called “people,” “labor,” “intellectual capital,” “human capital,” “human resources,” “talent,” or some other term, the resource that lies within employees & how they are organized is increasingly recognized as critical to strategic success & competitive advantage. As a management educator, this observation is so common today that in almost goes without saying. Digitalization, labor shortages, growth through acquisition, simultaneous downsizing and expansion, constant hype-competition and change, workforce demographic changes, and globalization are just a few of the top human capital trends.

As such, I am very happy to receive the new textbook, Human Resource Management: Understanding Traditional Foundations and Modern Innovations, published by Routledge. The author of this book is Professor Dr. Debashish (Deb) Sengupta, SFHEA, Course Leader MSc International Business and Management (IBM), University of Portsmouth, London. In his message to me, Deb specified that “One of my key aims in writing this book was to connect academic foundations with the realities of contemporary HR practice. Contributions from professionals such as yourself have helped bring that vision to life by giving readers insights into real organizations, challenges and practices. It is wonderful to now see your contribution as part of the published book".
Deb revealed that, “I am particularly pleased to let you know that your contribution appears in the published book as Reading Exhibit [15.1]: ”Sejahtera Leadership: Philosophy, Concept, and Operations". My colleague, Yazdi Bankwala, COO Global Sejahtera, has also contributed one Reading Exhibit.

It is a commonly held fallacy that the future of the HR profession lies exclusively in the realm of roles such as “strategic business partner,” “organizational architect,” or “human capital change agent.” The idea seems to be that if HR professionals aren't in one of these roles, they are irrelevant, outsourced, or obsolete. Of course, these roles are very important, but history shows that mature professionals extend their role, rather than leaving earlier roles behind.
