In a recent operation, police apprehended two individuals and seized five kilograms of ganja at the main entrance of The Zone Duty-Free complex in Padang Besar. The first suspect, a 23-year-old man, was detained after exhibiting suspicious behaviour near the complex's entrance. A subsequent inspection revealed five slabs of what appeared to be ganja, wrapped in red aluminium foil, in a blue bag the suspect was carrying.
Padang Besar police chief ACP Mohd Shokri Abdullah provided details of the operation, explaining that the first suspect was seated on a green Honda RSX 150 motorcycle when the police noticed his suspicious activities. Following the initial arrest, the authorities detained a second suspect, aged 36, near the same location. While the second suspect didn't possess any prohibited items at the time of arrest, he is believed to be the mastermind orchestrating the illegal activity. The first suspect is considered a runner, responsible for attempting to smuggle the drugs from a neighbouring country.
Further investigations revealed that both suspects had extensive criminal records, with the first suspect having four previous offences and the second suspect having 14 criminal records. Additionally, both individuals were listed in three previous wanted lists for drug-related offences and for escaping while still under conditional release (OBB). Urine tests conducted on both suspects confirmed the presence of Methamphetamine.
Authorities plan to remand both suspects for seven days, and the case will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This section deals with offences involving the trafficking of dangerous drugs and carries severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty.
The successful operation highlights the vigilance of law enforcement in combating drug-related activities and securing the community. The authorities remain committed to enforcing stringent measures to curb the trafficking of illegal substances and hold individuals accountable for their involvement in such criminal enterprises. As investigations progress, the legal proceedings will shed light on the extent of the suspects' involvement and any potential connections to larger drug networks. The seizure of five kilograms of ganja underscores the ongoing challenges authorities face in preventing the illegal drug trade and protecting public safety.
