A 58-year-old factory owner suffered burns trying to douse a fire at his fabric-processing factory in Butterworth, which destroyed 80% of the premises.
BUTTERWORTH: A factory owner suffered burns to his neck and hands while attempting to put out a fire at a fabric-processing factory in Jalan Bagan Ajam here yesterday.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the victim, H’ng Seng Peng, 58, sustained first-degree burns and received initial treatment from Health Ministry personnel before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
He said 26 personnel and six fire engines from seven stations were dispatched to the scene after the department received an emergency call at 6.09 pm.
“The fire involved a semi-permanent factory operating a fabric-processing facility producing material for sofa upholstery, measuring 60 by 100 square feet, with an estimated 80 per cent of the premises destroyed.
“The fire also destroyed two motorcycles by 50 per cent each, while a lorry and a forklift each sustained approximately 90 per cent damage,” he said in a statement today.
John said the fire was brought under control at 6.28 pm but the blaze was only fully extinguished at 4.35 am today.
