
Kota Kinabalu: The proposal to amend the University Act and University College Act (Auku) 1971 has been approved by the Federal Cabinet.
Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry is currently drafting an amendment of the (RUU) Auku Bill to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
“We have to go through several processes to ensure that the draft law conforms to what has been approved.
We have to take it to the Attorney General’s Department and then present it to the Cabinet,” he said at the 24th Universiti Malaysia Sabah Students Affairs Alumni Awards ceremony (Mahepa) recently.

In April, Mohamed Khaled said the amendment drafts of the Auku Act on Section 15 and 16 which related to student freedom will be sent to the Attorney General’s Department in mid-June.
He reiterated that the implementation of the shortening of the courses programme from four years to three years in which UMS is not involve includes the Sports Science and Communication Technology (IT) because IT graduates are urgently needed by the industry.
In addition, all shortened programmes have been evaluated by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to ensure quality. Only 44 programmes have been identified that can be shortened.
During the event, he presented four awards - the Ibnu Umm Maktum Special Leadership Award, Postgraduate Student Leadership Special Award, International Leadership Special Award and the Student Character Award.
