Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Youth Council (MBS) has welcomed the growth in Sabah’s manufacturing sector, which recorded RM25.59 billion in approved investments involving 101 projects from September 2020 to June 2026, with the potential to create 9,157 jobs.
MBS president Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said the development reflected the state’s industrial growth potential, which should be harnessed to expand economic opportunities and enhance the competitiveness of the local workforce.
“MBS views investment growth as an important opportunity to strengthen Sabah’s economy. However, investment success should not be measured solely by capital value and the number of projects, but also by job quality, income growth and the participation of local youth in the industry,” he said.
He said the projected 9,157 jobs needed to translate into actual employment opportunities offering competitive salaries, skills development and sustainable career pathways.
Abqaree said coordination between industry requirements, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet) institutions and higher education institutions should be strengthened to ensure Sabah’s youth acquired skills relevant to the manufacturing sector’s development.
“We do not merely want Sabah’s youth to fill job vacancies, but also to have the ability to grow into skilled workers, professionals and industry leaders in the future,” he said.
