PUTATAN: Parti Warisan Putatan division is calling on the Ministry of Infrastructure and relevant state agencies to take immediate action to reduce risks of accidents in Kg. Meruntum, located near the Putatan-Lok Kawi Highway.
Its Women’s Chief, Juriah Uda, said the safety and wellbeing of residents must be prioritized, especially since the village existed long before the highway was constructed.
AdvertisementOne of the improvements that can be implemented right now, she said, is the installation of warning signs to alert drivers about the presence of the village so they can drive more cautiously.
Juriah said installation of ‘rumble strips’ should also be considered to help reduce vehicle speeds and alert drivers who may be inattentive while driving.

Fast-moving vehicles may not have enough time to avoid hitting them.
“Therefore, the construction of a pedestrian bridge should be considered to ensure the safety of those who need to cross the highway,” she said in a statement here.

“This not only disrupts traffic flow but also increases the risk of accidents, particularly at night.

Fortunately, I was not injured, but my vehicle sustained damage to its door after being hit by a speeding truck,” she said.
Due to the high risks faced by the villagers here, Juriah said immediate action is needed from the government at both district and state levels.
She said the government must remember that Kg. Meruntum existed before this highway was built. The safety of its residents should have been taken into account earlier.
“I hope these infrastructure improvements will be prioritized to ensure the safety and well-being of the villagers,” she said.
