Call the Midwife star Helen George shares tragic death of boyfriend after sudden diagnosis

Call the Midwife star Helen George has revealed that her relationship with a recent boyfriend was tragically cut short after he died from leukaemia.

George, 42, was dating the man – whose identity she did not disclose – in 2025 when she learnt he had cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The very next day, she had to travel to the Bahamas to film ITV series Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.

“I had been dating someone who very suddenly got diagnosed with leukaemia,” she told Mystic Mates podcast. “It was pretty serious from the start and he knew.

“The next day after that happened, I had to fly out to the Bahamas to film the ITV shark documentary.”

In between filming, George said she would call her best friend – her podcast co-host Yvette Robinson – and “sob down the phone about this lovely, beautiful man”.

George, best known for playing Nurse Trixie in BBC series Call the Midwife, claimed that he’s looking over her and “comes through” in her clairvoyance readings.

"I went to this clairvoyant last week and she said, 'This is your ex-boyfriend, and he died very suddenly after you started dating him. He's come into the room because he's not very happy about your situation.’”

This comment reduced George to tears as “it was wonderful to think this person, whom I didn't really know for that long, was there”.

“He was angry that he'd left me looking for someone else and then finding someone else who wasn't suitable,” she continued.

After the man’s death, George had a whirlwind romance with businessman Dan Innes – but split from him earlier this year after “their differences became apparent”, according to a source.

In the week after their breakup, George posted quotes on Instagram that alluded to feeling disrespected. One quote read: "I absolutely take responsibility for when I am wrong. But I will never apologise for responding to disrespect. If you lit the match, do not stand in the flames pretending to be the victim."

George was previously married to actor Oliver Boot from 2011 to 2015 and was in a relationship with her Call the Midwife co-star Jack Ashton from 2016 to 2023. They have two daughters.

Earlier this year, George opened up about being diagnosed with ADHD after the birth of her second child in 2021.

The actor said she experienced a “lightbulb moment” while speaking with a friend who has ADHD, who explained to her that some women are diagnosed later in life after becoming mothers.

She said on I'm ADHD! No You're Not podcast that she is still learning how to live with the condition: “I've got to work out how you can function best so that you can mother best, so that their lives can be the best that they can be.”
