KUALA LUMPUR – Calls for Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to resign as investment, trade and industry (Miti) minister following his exit from Umno are unwarranted, especially during a global economic crisis.
Pandan Umno Youth chief Rizwan Shah Azlan said talent and expertise like Zafrul’s should not be sidelined.
“It is highly inappropriate to pressure Tengku Zafrul to vacate his ministerial post at such a crucial time, especially considering his consistent track record and performance.
“At a time when the country needs its strongest Cabinet line-up, someone with his capabilities should not be on the sidelines.
“This was no easy decision for Tengku Zafrul, given that he has been with Umno since 1997.
“However, we must respect his right as an individual to chart his own political path, having considered various factors including compatibility and alignment with his political struggle,” he said in a statement today.
He added that Zafrul has always placed the nation’s interests above personal ones, a trait reflected in his decisions and actions.
“During my time working with him at the office of the Minister’s Political Secretary in Miti, I personally witnessed his professionalism, integrity, and dedication in carrying out his duties as minister.
“Some may say anyone could do what he does if given the same opportunity – I disagree.
“He has had early exposure to leading major corporations since his youth.
“His leadership, grounded in extensive experience in finance and government administration, has brought significant benefits to the country, especially in trade, investment, and industry. There’s no reason he shouldn’t continue contributing,” he said.
Previously, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh had urged Zafrul to resign from his ministerial post after announcing his departure from Umno and intention to join PKR.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Zafrul’s position as investment, trade and industry minister would remain unchanged despite his announcement to leave Umno and express interest in joining PKR.
The prime minister said Zafrul has played a key role in securing hundreds of billions in investment for the country. – June 2, 2025
