Day nine at Wimbledon 2025 saw the men’s and women’s quarter-finalists take centre-stage in an eye-catching line-up at SW19.

The last remaining Briton in either singles draw, Cameron Norrie, took on reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court in the pick of the ties, but the underdog was beaten by the Spaniard in a straight-sets masterclass.

They followed the women’s world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who overcame a tough test against Laura Siegemund in three sets. And on No 1 Court, Taylor Fritz downed Karen Khachanov in four sets to set up a semi-final with Alcaraz, while Amanda Anisimova knocked out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Before that, Monday evening saw huge drama on Centre Court as an injured Grigor Dimitrov was forced to dramatically retire when two sets up against No 1 seed Jannik Sinner. It was a fifth straight grand slam retirement for a tearful Dimitrov, with a stunned Roger Federer watching on from the Royal Box, while Sinner carried the Bulgarian’s bags off court in a show of sportsmanship.

Alcaraz on how he'll relax before semi-final

19:12

,

Alex Pattle

Alcaraz says he plans to play some golf to relax before the semi-finals, and – I think – tells a fan that he won’t have time to go to “Ibiza”!

It sounds like that’s what the fan and Alcaraz said, anyway!

Alcaraz on upcoming semi-final with Fritz

19:05

,

Alex Pattle

“He's playing great, I think the grass season for him has been really successful so far. Two titles, a semi-final here at Wimbledon, so I've just got to be ready for that battle.

“I've played a few times against him, he's always really tough to play against. I will try to play the same level as today, I think I will get a chance, but just focus.

“But right now, I just want to enjoy and live this moment, because it's not easy to play a semi-final here at Wimbledon.”

Alcaraz discusses smooth win over Norrie

18:59

Alcaraz: “Yeah, I mean, I'm just really happy. I mean, to be able to play another semi-final here at Wimbledon is super special.

“It's something that I wanted to do at the beginning of the week: just try to go as far as I can and give myself the chance to play a semi-final here. It's gonna be great.

“So, I'm just really happy with the level I played today against a really difficult player like Cam. He's an amazing player, he's an amazing guy as well.

“I'm pretty sure there's nobody who works harder than him, and I'm just really happy to see him fighting for great things and playing these kinds of matches.”

GAME, SET AND MATCH! ALCARAZ INTO SEMI-FINALS

18:49

,

Alex Pattle

One more hold of serve from Alcaraz, and he wraps this one up in no time at all!

One hour and 40 minutes is all he needed.

Credit to Norrie, who saved a set point in that penultimate game, but the writing had long been on the wall.

6-2, 6-3, 6-3, Alcaraz is into the semi-finals as he continues his bid for a third straight Wimbledon crown.

Meanwhile, British hopes are extinguished for another year in the men’s and women’s singles, with Norrie the last player left before this defeat.

Fifth seed Taylor Fritz awaits Alcaraz in the final four...

But more misses from Norrie hand Alcaraz a double break point, and a chance for a hefty lead...

Three break points for the British underdog... but Alcaraz saves all three! Fine serving bails out the defending champ.

And again! Norrie earns a fourth shot at a break, but he still can’t convert. Will this haunt him?

Possibly, as Alcaraz beats him with a drop shot. Norrie doesn’t even bother to leave the baseline and chase it, it’s that good.

Now Alcaraz moves in behind a serve and leaves a volley... and the ball JUST bounces long. Brave, and correct.

Crowd boos as electronic line calling ‘malfunctions’ again in Fritz match

15:27

More from Kieran Jackson on that ELC incident in the Fritz vs Khachanov match:

“The contentious Wimbledon electronic line calling (ELC) system malfunctioned again in Taylor Fritz’s quarter-final against Karen Khachanov on Tuesday, resulting in jeers from the Court 1 crowd.

“In the first game of the fourth set, at 15-0 on Fritz’s serve, the AI system called the ball ‘fault’ mid-rally, with the ball nowhere near being out of the singles court.

“The umpire quickly called ‘stop’, made a call to colleagues and then explained the situation over the microphone to the Court 1 crowd: ‘We will replay the last point due to a malfunction, the system is now working.’

“Fortunately, neither Fritz or Khachanov were at an advantage during the point, with both players proceeding without protest, though the incident did provoke a few boos from the crowd on No 1 Court.

“The incident is the latest contentious situation involving ELC, with the system replacing human line judges this year for the first time in the tournament’s 147-year history.”

Grigor Dimitrov’s coach plays down roof theory around injury

12:54

,

Alex Pattle

Here’s what Dimitrov’s coach Jamie Delgado had to say about the idea that the timing of yesterday’s roof closure might have impacted Dimitrov, and how warmed up he was prior to his injury:

“I don’t think so. I know some people might feel that way, but Grigor actually – after the match – was [saying he was] liking when the roof went on, because he actually felt it got a little bit warmer in there, and his body loosened up a little bit more, even more than it was.

“I guess it’s a separate question whether it should have been closed or not. I mean, I don’t think it made a difference in his actual injury.

“But it should be an outdoor tournament and you should play outdoors for as long as possible – I don't disagree with that.”

Yesterday: Sinner escapes defeat after Dimitrov heartbreak

09:29

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Top seed Jannik Sinner struggled with an elbow problem and was given an almighty scare before advancing to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after a cruel twist of fate for his 19th-seeded opponent Grigor Dimitrov who retired injured at two sets up.

Novak Djokovic continued his quest for Grand Slam glory at the All England Club with a battling victory over Alex de Minaur while five-times major champion Iga Swiatek found her grasscourt wings to fly past Clara Tauson.

The drama was reserved for the evening clash on Centre Court as Dimitrov, who had pulled out injured in his last four majors, played exquisite tennis to go up 6-3 7-5 2-2 but then crashed to the ground after a big ace to hold serve.

Sinner, who had been hampered for much of the contest by a right elbow issue after slipping and falling to the turf early on, was left feeling sorry for his opponent who threw in the towel after a short assessment by a doctor.
