Canada, led by ice hockey superstar Sidney Crosby, avenged defeat to the US in the Olympic final with a 4-0 win in the men's world championship quarter-finals on Thursday.

The record champions beat the defending champions and Olympic winners 4-0 in Switzerland and will play in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Almost three months after the bitter 2-1 overtime defeat in Milan against the US, 19-year-old captain Macklin Celebrini (19th minute), Dylan Holloway (30th), Connor Brown (59th) and Crosby (60th) scored in Fribourg.

While Canada, featuring Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Celebrini (San Jose Sharks), are among the World Cup favourites in Switzerland, the US team - apart from Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers) - are without all their NHL stars.

Finland reached the semi-finals for the first time since winning the World Cup in 2022. The northern Europeans beat the Czechs 4-1 in Zurich.

In each of the past three years, Finland had been knocked out in the quarter-finals.
