Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has delivered her annual State of the European Union speech in Strasbourg, France.
Among her main announcements were a European Heatwave Plan, a Security Council with like-minded allies and an emergency framework to cope with mass arrivals of irregular migrants inspired by the Ceuta border crisis.
Von der Leyen also opened the door for Canada to become the first-ever "associate member" of the European Union to bring the relationship to the "highest level possible".
She also addressed the rapid development of AI systems, social media restrictions for children, Russia's war on Ukraine, hybrid warfare and the Middle East.
