Canada's injured midfielder Ismael Koné received a loud welcome from fans as he returned to Vancouver's stadium on Wednesday, six days after breaking his leg there and being ruled out of the World Cup.

The 24-year-old was hurt in the 6-0 win against Qatar and has already undergone surgery.

Just over an hour before the final group match against Switzerland, the player from Italian club Sassuolo was pushed into the arena in a wheelchair.

Koné, expected to make a full recovery, waved to the fans and was given huge applause before the 2-1 loss. Canada still qualified for the last 32.

Meanwhile, FIFA announced that Qatar's Assim Madibo was being banned for five international games for the tackle which broke Koné's leg. He already missed the 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday which eliminated Qatar.
