KOTA KINABALU: Kapayan Assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang (pic) has urged the government to cancel plans for a Malaysia Day fireworks display, saying it is inappropriate amid the floods and landslides that have struck many districts in Sabah.
She said continuous downpours had caused rivers to overflow, flooding homes, damaging roads and infrastructure, and forcing residents to seek shelter at temporary relief centres.
Jannie stressed that victims were still struggling to clean up mud-filled homes or were left with only a few belongings after evacuating, and that staging fireworks would appear insensitive to their hardship.
She suggested funds set aside for fireworks be redirected to disaster relief efforts, including rebuilding damaged infrastructure and providing essential goods to affected families.
Jannie added that she has been visiting disaster-hit areas, assisting victims, and raising donations through her constituency office, while calling for unity and solidarity to help Sabah recover from the disaster.
