KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP has urged the government to cancel Malaysia Day celebrations in light of severe floods, landslides, and disruptions to power and water supply affecting communities across the state.
its Chairman, Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe (pic) said the crises demand undivided government attention, noting that the collapse of a 275kV transmission tower has worsened the situation by cutting electricity to wide areas.
He said flash floods have forced families to evacuate, damaged homes, and disrupted livelihoods, while shortages of clean water have compounded the suffering of many districts.
Phoong stressed that the true spirit of Malaysia Day lies not in festivities but in solidarity, urging state and federal agencies to channel all resources into relief and recovery.
He added that the most meaningful way to mark the occasion is by protecting lives, restoring basic services, and ensuring assistance reaches victims without delay.
