Former Real Madrid and Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has questioned Mateu Alemany's departure from Barcelona.

With a year remaining on his contract, Alemany will leave his role as Barca's director of football at the end of the season. A move to Aston Villa has been mooted for the Spaniard.

Canizares, meanwhile, said on Radio Marca: "Mateu Alemany is not a person who moves for money. Nobody would change one club for another just for money.

"It seems to me a normal destiny if you are not working at ease in a place. Surely there (at Aston Villa) you have an autonomy that you do not enjoy in Barcelona.

"It is very difficult to find clubs in football that let you make your decisions, so finding a site like this can be a reason to see it as your next team."
