Car drives into crowd of World Cup fans in Mexico injuring more than a dozen

At least 17 people have been injured after a car struck football fans celebrating a world cup win in Mexico.

Footage shared online showed a black car driving through a large gathering in the city of Cabo San Lucas following Mexico’s win over Czechia late on Wednesday.

The driver is believed to have accelerated suddenly after being surrounded while driving through the crowds on the touristic Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard, according to Aristegui, citing municipal police.

Authorities are still trying to understand exactly what happened, the city council said, adding that the driver was arrested and taken into custody with injuries.

Ten patients including eight women and two men were taken to the IMSS General Hospital, while three were taken to Cabo San Lucas General, two to San Luke’s, and one to the AMC Hospital, the council said.

One person remained under specialised care in a critical condition. Emergency services are offering support to the families of the injured.

"I would like to express our deepest solidarity with the people affected and their families following the unfortunate events that occurred tonight," Los Cabos' Acting Mayor Jose Manuel Larumbe said, promising to keep the public informed regarding authorities' investigations into the incident.

Police responded to the incident at around 9.05pm and are working with investigating authorities to establish the full facts.

Roads were closed for forensic teams to start their investigations, as casualties were taken to hospital. The affected roads have since been reopened.

Huge crowds turned out late on Wednesday as Mexico qualified for the round of 32 undefeated for the first time in its history.

Located on Mexico's Baja California peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico's top luxury tourist destinations and one of the two principal cities within the Municipality of Los Cabos, which also includes San Jose del Cabo and the resort corridor connecting them.
