TAWAU: Civilians came to the rescue of a woman and child when their car ended up in a drain and was nearly submerged in flash floods in Sin Onn, Wednesday.

Following three hours of non-stop rain starting at 2pm, flash floods also affected a number of other locations.

Among areas impacted include Mile 2, Jalan Apas, Mile 4, Jalan Apas, Kongsi 8, Taman Semarak and housing estates in the Jalan Sin Onn area.

The rising water level of the big ditch in Sin Onn also overflowed onto the road, resulting in flooding in nearby areas.

The Tawau Fire and Rescue Station received at least two emergency calls due to the flood disaster around 4.45pm and 4.57pm, respectively, at Taman Capital and Fuji Mart roundabout which is in Jalan Sin Onn area.

Its Station Chief Julius John Stephen Jr said no evacuation operation has been carried out so far.

“Our team is monitoring the flooded areas,” he said, adding the flash flood is caused by clogged drains, resulting in water spilling onto the road.

He said vehicles can still access the areas concerned and that the water level has started to subside towards evening.

He said the two teams were deployed to monitor the situation and that their operation ended at 5.20pm and 5.49pm, respectively.
