In a shocking incident reported by Kuantan police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu, a man stole a woman's car at a petrol station in Semambu, near Kuantan, with the woman's mother still seated in the passenger seat.
The victim, retired teacher Napisah Muhammad, aged 68, was inside the car at approximately 3:10 pm when an unknown individual drove off with the vehicle. Thankfully, the perpetrator later released Napisah safely about 400 meters away from the petrol station.
The stolen car was identified as a red Honda City 1.5L V with registration number BQM 2707. In addition to the car, the thief also escaped with the daughter's phone, resulting in a total estimated loss of RM94,000.
According to Wan Zahari, Napisah, her husband Halim Omar (aged 77), and their daughter had stopped at the petrol station to refuel and use the restroom. After the daughter completed refueling, she parked the car near the restroom and left the engine running. Meanwhile, Napisah entered the vehicle, prompting her daughter to head towards the restroom. It was during this brief moment of distraction that the thief took advantage and made his move, causing Napisah to scream for help.
CCTV footage from the station revealed that the suspect arrived on a stolen motorcycle with false registration plates. He then surreptitiously entered the car and swiftly drove off with Napisah still inside. The brazenness of the act and the audacity to steal a car with a passenger present highlight the urgency for heightened security measures, especially in public areas.
Law enforcement authorities are currently working diligently to identify and apprehend the perpetrator behind this heinous act. Such incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution, even in seemingly safe environments like petrol stations.
