A retired teacher faced a terrifying ordeal when an unknown man hijacked her daughter’s car at a petrol station in Semambu yesterday.
Kuantan police chief ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu reported that the incident occurred at approximately 3:10 pm. Napisah Muhammad, 68, was sitting inside the car when the assailant drove it away from the petrol station, later dropping her off safely about 400 meters away.
The stolen vehicle was identified as a red Honda City 1.5L V with the registration number BQM 2707. The thief also made off with an iPhone 14, a Touch n Go (TnG) card, and a Smart Tag, bringing the total estimated loss to around RM94,000.
Prior to the hijacking, Napisah, her husband Mohamed Halim Omar, 77, and their daughter, an accountant, had stopped at the petrol station to refuel and use the washroom. While the daughter was refueling, Napisah and her husband had left the car to use the facilities. After refueling, the daughter parked the car near the washroom and left the engine running.
As Napisah returned to the car and her daughter went to the washroom, she heard her mother screaming for help. The car was speeding away with her mother still inside.
Initial investigations, supported by CCTV footage, revealed that the suspect had arrived at the station on a stolen motorcycle with false registration numbers. He took advantage of the situation, sneaking into the car and driving off with Napisah inside.
Police chief Wan Mohd Zahari assured that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and caution even in seemingly safe environments like petrol stations. The authorities are urging the public to be more aware of their surroundings and to take precautions to avoid such incidents in the future.
