PRODUCTION of carabao, cattle and goat declined in the second quarter from the previous year, while farmgate prices increased, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Carabao production from April to June fell 6.6 percent to 29,810 metric tons (MT) liveweight, from 31,940 MT in the same period last year.
Carabao inventory also dropped. As of June 30, the country’s carabao population was estimated at 2.40 million heads, down 3 percent from 2.62 million a year earlier.
Northern Mindanao was the top carabao-producing region with 3,240 MT, accounting for 11.5 percent of total output during the quarter.
Next was Eastern Visayas with 3,101 MT; Negros Island Region, 2,360 MT; Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 2,090 MT; and Calabarzon, 1,990 MT.
These five regions accounted for 43.5 percent of total carabao production.
Despite lower output, the average farmgate price of carabao for slaughter rose 4.7 percent to P201.08 per kilogram liveweight, from P192.04 a year earlier.
Cattle production likewise declined by 5.2 percent to 59,080 MT from 62,290 MT in the second quarter of 2025.
As of June 30, cattle inventory stood at 2.48 million heads, down 1.6 percent from 2.52 million a year earlier.
Northern Mindanao was also the country’s top cattle producer, with 9,020 MT or 15.3 percent of total production. It was followed by Calabarzon with 8,360 MT; Ilocos, 6,013 MT; Bicol, 4,890 MT; and Zamboanga Peninsula with 4,000 MT.
These five regions accounted for 54.8 percent of total cattle production during the quarter.
The average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter increased 3.1 percent to P221.65/kg liveweight, from P215 a year earlier.
Meanwhile, goat production declined 3.3 percent to 15,560 MT from 16,090 MT a year earlier.
Goat inventory as of June 30 fell 4 percent to 3.49 million heads from 3.64 million in the same period last year.
Central Luzon was the top goat-producing region with 2,000 MT, representing 12.9 percent of total production.
It was followed by Northern Mindanao with 1,610 MT; Davao, 1,530 MT; Negros Island Region, 1,400 MT; and Central Visayas, 1,360 MT.
Combined, these five regions accounted for 50.8 percent of total goat production.
The average farmgate price of goats for slaughter edged up 0.6 percent to P243.55/kg liveweight, from P242.18 a year earlier.
