Newcastle travel to Nottingham Forest in the second round of the Carabao Cup after several thrilling first round ties this week.
As the first cup competition of the season begins, Premier League clubs have now entered in the second round.
Norwich’s 4-3 win over Stevenage sees them take on Crystal Palace next, while Grimsby’s reward for a penalty shoot-out win over Bradford City is a second-round tie with Sheffield Wednesday.
And though the opposition could be tougher, given Premier League sides in Europe will only enter the competition in the third round, the potential for upsets is also greater as lower-league sides look to book their place in the third round.

Kalvin Phillips wanted by two more Premier League clubs as Man City exit looms
21:54
Mike Jones
Ipswich and Fulham have joined the race for Kalvin Phillips. Everton are also interested in the England midfielder who is surplus to requirements at Manchester City.
While Phillips also has admirers abroad, the former Leeds player would rather remain in England and chose to join West Ham instead of Juventus in January.
Phillips has been a target for Everton all summer and, with Amadou Onana joining Aston Villa for £50m, manager Sean Dyche could have an added need for a defensive midfielder.
Fulham are looking for a replacement for Joao Palhinha, who has been bought by Bayern Munich, while Ipswich are looking to strengthen their squad after their return to the top flight.

Liverpool complete sale of Fabio Carvalho
21:46
Mike Jones
Fabio Carvalho has completed his move from Liverpool to fellow Premier League side Brentford signing a five-year deal with the Bees. The contract also includes the option for a one-year extension.
The two clubs agreed a fee rising to £27.5m when featuring in potential add-ons which can easily be met. The Reds have also included a 17.5 percent sell-on clause for the winger, who cost them just £5m when he joined from Fulham in 2022.
For their part, Fulham inserted their own 20 percent sell-on clause, from the profits of Carvalho’s move, during that previous sale so look set to make more than £4m from the deal.
With Arne Slot in charge, change is coming to Anfield but not how you’d expect
21:38
Jack Rathborn
Last season had barely finished when one man at Anfield launched into a chorus of Arne Slot’s name. Many another joined in. It helped, of course, that the instigator of the chant was Jurgen Klopp, in a parting gift.
Klopp set the scene for Slot’s reign. His will also be the spectre that looms over it. Liverpool have lost their biggest character, their best communicator, their most charismatic figure.
Their history shows that they can go on to greater success thereafter: Bob Paisley won more trophies than the iconic Bill Shankly. And if such a comparison applies pressure to Slot, the Dutchman has spent team meetings looking at areas where Liverpool can improve from last season.

London has shifted the balance of power in the Premier League – but not how you might think
21:18
Mike Jones
It is a refrain that many Premier League executives have become resigned to – at least in some areas of the country. As part of summer negotiations with foreign players, they have been repeatedly told “he’d prefer to live in London”. The internal research of one Championship club even found that, on average, those outside the capital had to offer an estimated £2,000 more a week to persuade signings to go outside London.
This is a modern and more widespread version of what used to be known as the “Newcastle United premium”. Over 20 years ago, when the St James Park club were trying to properly compete with rivals from London and the northwest, they became renowned for some of the highest contracts in the Premier League. Kieron Dyer was at one point believed to be the division’s best-paid player. That dynamic has now dramatically evolved, to almost split the Premier League.

Arsenal have first Mikel Merino offer rejected
21:03
Mike Jones
Real Sociedad have rejected a first offer from Arsenal for the proposed transfer of highly-rated midfielder Mikel Merino, although talks are continuing between the clubs.
Arsenal’s offer was just over €30m and while Real Sociedad initially asked for over €40m, they are still holding out for €35m (£29.9m), which the Gunners are yet to meet, with the 28-year-old’s contract being up next year. Radio Marca first reported the rejection of the offer.
As we reported earlier this week,The Independent understands that negotiations could yet go to the end of the transfer window, with the Basque club having demonstrated just how tough they are to negotiate with during Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi earlier in the window.
VAR to explain decisions in real time...on social media
20:50
Mike Jones
The Premier League hopes to reduce frustration with the VAR system with the launch of a social media account that will provide near real-time updates and explanations regarding officiating and operational decisions for every match.
Teams voted in favour of keeping VAR in June despite huge amounts of criticism about the technology-aided officiating system last season, with Wolverhampton Wanderers initiating a petition to scrap it.
The upcoming season will be the sixth season with VAR in the top flight, but the league has promised to improve the technology and how it will be used.
“In the absence of live VAR audio being broadcast, as it is not permitted in football, the Premier League Match Centre will be able to relay on social media near-live information from the VAR Hub during a game,” the league said in a statement on Tuesday.
Noussair Mazraoui completes move to Manchester United
20:35
Mike Jones
Manchester United have completed a £51.8m double deal from Bayern Munich by bringing Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt to Old Trafford.
United have taken their tally to four summer signings with the €15m transfer of full-back Mazraoui, whose fee could rise by a further €5m in add-ons.
He has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year, and the signings of Mazraoui and De Ligt mean United have now spent almost £250m on former Ajax players in manager Erik ten Hag’s reign.
However, Mazraoui’s arrival was funded by selling right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham for £15m earlier on Tuesday.

Jadon Sancho could join Paris Saint-Germain on a loan with an obligation to buy after negotiations between the French club and Manchester United.
The two clubs are attempting to unlock a deal that could also see midfielder Manuel Ugarte move in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.
Talks have been ongoing for weeks, and it is understood that even Marcus Rashford has been raised, due to the French club’s long-standing interest.
