KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a cargo ship recently for allegedly anchoring without authorisation about two nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Tajau Laut.

MMEA Kudat Director Zone Maritime Commander Hasbullah Omar said the vessel was intercepted by a maritime patrol asset during routine monitoring in the area.

He said checks found the ship operated by 16 male crew members, including a Vietnamese captain, who failed to produce valid documents from the port authorities permitting them to anchor.

“The case is being investigated under the Sabah Ports and Harbours Department Enactment 2002 for anchoring in state waters without approval from the department’s director,” he said in a statement.

Two of the crew, including the captain, were brought to the Kudat Martime Zone Office for further investigation under existing laws.

Hasbullah emphasised that MMEA will not compromise with any party found violating the nation’s maritime laws.

He also reminded the maritime community to comply with regulations and obtain proper authorisation before conducting any activities in Sabah waters, adding that patrols and enforcement will continue to be stepped up to safeguard national waters.
