GILAS Pilipinas mainstay Carl Tamayo has re-signed with the Changwon LG Sakers shortly after the Korean Basketball League (KBL) powerhouse fell short of their title defense in the recent 2025-26 season.
Long-time player agent Charlie Dy said the 6-foot-7 Tamayo inked a fresh one-year extension deal with the LG Sakers, while having high hopes that the former University of the Philippines star will be able to contribute to the Korean squad’s future KBL championship bid.
“We’re very happy that Carl’s contract was renewed by Changwon LG Sakers and we look forward to them to win more championships together,” Dy told The Manila Times on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Tamayo averaged 14.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the LG Sakers this past season.
The Korean ball club saw its back-to-back title bid come to an end when it got swept by Kevin Quiambao’s Goyang Sono Skygunners, 3-0, in the semifinals.
The Filipino forward recently visited his family in Cebu, before appearing in day 23 of the event presented by Jordan last Saturday in Manila.
Quiambao’s Sono Skygunners eventually bowed to 2025-26 KBL champions Busan KCC Egis that had former Magnolia forward William Navarro as its Asian import.
Tamayo is expected to stay in the Philippines and will just join Gilas Pilipinas late this month when the national team regroups in time for the final window of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.
Gilas will be playing two away games — going up against New Zealand in Auckland on July 3, followed by Australia in Perth on July 6. RICHARD DY
