Castro signs with SV.League club Fragolad

ATENEO de Manila University standout Brian Castro is taking his talents to Japan after signing with Fragolad Kagoshima of the Japan SV.League.

The Filipino-American middle blocker announced the move during a virtual press conference, calling it the fulfillment of a long-time goal.

“Before I left the US, I told myself my plan was to play for Ateneo for two years and then play overseas. I specifically said I was going to play in Japan, no matter how long it took,” Castro said.

“To do it right after Ateneo is a surreal experience, and I’m very grateful. I want to thank Sir Ali and VP Global for making this happen. Without them, I wouldn’t be here.”

Castro becomes the third Filipino men’s volleyball player to compete in Japan’s top division, joining Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo.

The 24-year-old said both players inspired him throughout his career, adding that facing Espejo during Ateneo’s training camp in Osaka last year gave him a glimpse of the level of competition in Japan.

Castro spent two seasons with Ateneo, helping the Blue Eagles reach the Final Four in UAAP Season 88.

He said his Ateneo stint taught him resilience after overcoming homesickness following his move from the United States to the Philippines.

Looking ahead to his overseas career, Castro said he embraces the responsibility of representing the country.

“Every Filipino who goes overseas represents the Philippines, and I’d like to do the same. I want to represent this country, represent Ateneo, represent myself, and represent my name,” he said.

“Here, I’m by myself, so the biggest thing is to stay strong and be resilient—for everyone and for this country.”
