KOTA MARUDU: A woman’s dramatic tale of being mugged and losing her gold jewellery was quickly unravelled when her mother reported the incident to the police.
District Police Chief Superintendent Simiun Lomudin said the 49-year-old mother lodged a report on Friday night, claiming her 29-year-old daughter had been attacked in Pekan Tandek by two men on a motorbike.
The daughter allegedly sustained bodily injuries and claimed she lost three gold bangles and a necklace in the so-called robbery.
However, police investigations and interviews with the “victim” and her husband at Hospital Lotong revealed the entire story was fabricated to hide the fact she had pawned the jewellery to settle debts.
Police are still probing the case, and the public has been urged not to speculate or spread rumours that may jeopardise the investigation.
