MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday revealed that he was reportedly offered an arrangement in which he would step down from his post as Senate President while continuing to serve as the presiding officer of the impeachment court in the anticipated trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Cayetano's revelation during a press conference comes at a time of ongoing leadership tensions in the Senate and debates about the chamber's role in the impeachment process. Cayetano refrained from identifying who made the proposal.
Asked whether a special session of the Senate would be convened, Cayetano said the decision would depend on the actions of competing groups within the chamber and whether his bloc would participate.
