A man who attempted to blend in as a supermarket worker before breaking into a cash box and fleeing with RM200 from a fruit stall in a Setia Alam supermarket has been caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV), exposing his crime.

The incident occurred at about 8:18 AM on 12 February, when the premises had only just opened and foot traffic was still minimal.

A one-minute CCTV clip of the theft has since gone viral on social media, drawing public attention to the act.

Shah Alam District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ramsay Embol said a police report was lodged by the stall owner at 6:05 PM the same day.

Pretended to be an actual employee

Investigations revealed that the suspect, dressed entirely in black and equipped with a cap, face mask, and gloves, was seen entering the fruit stall before forcing open the cash box.

“The man pried open and rummaged through the stall’s cash box before stealing RM200,” Ramsay said.

He added that the suspect went to great lengths to appear legitimate, even pretending to open the stall for business and throwing away trash to mislead bystanders into thinking he was an actual employee.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.

Police are now actively tracking down the suspect.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigating Officer Sergeant Aznor Zainal at 017‑398 9155 to assist with the investigation,” Ramsay said.
