KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia Day on Sept 16 is an occasion to appreciate Sabah’s identity while strengthening the spirit of being Malaysian, said Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary II Datin Dr Cleopatra @ Clare Asing.
She said Sabah not only had its own identity, culture and history, but was also part of a large and diverse nation that should be appreciated.
“Sabah’s cultural diversity is a major asset and a source of strength. We have many ethnic groups, languages, customs, traditional food, attire, performing arts and heritage, yet we can live together peacefully and prosperously as part of Malaysia.
“I hope Sabahans will continue to appreciate these strengths responsibly by protecting the environment, preserving our culture and respecting one another. Sept 16 is a very meaningful date as it reminds us of the history of Malaysia’s formation and Sabah’s role in that history.
“We should also view Malaysia Day as an opportunity for the present generation to understand that Malaysia was built on the spirit of cooperation and togetherness,” she said.
Cleopatra was speaking during the “Santai Ja Bah” podcast held in conjunction with the 2026 Sabah-level Malaysia Day celebrations and hosted by Sabah TV host Rayyan Rizqin here recently.
Meanwhile, she said efforts to document, preserve and promote cultural heritage were important to ensure it remained understood by future generations.
“Culture is not merely a performance for tourists. It is an identity that must be preserved and an integral part of our community’s identity.
“If we do not understand our own culture, younger generations may eventually no longer understand the values and meanings behind certain traditions,” she said.
Cleopatra also urged young people to learn about history and culture, master technology, broaden their knowledge and use their creativity to elevate Sabah’s name.
