It’s not uncommon to enjoy a tipple when watching telly – but one particular star of Celebrity Gogglebox takes it even further, admitting that he’s often “p***ed” when filming the Channel 4 show.
Happy Mondays star Bez – full name Mark Berry – has been a fixture on Celebrity Gogglebox with bandmember Shaun Ryder since its first series in 2019, with the pair becoming fan favourites over the years thanks to their candid TV commentary.
Bez has now revealed that he’s often tipsy while filming the hit reality show, saying: “You can only do that show when you’re drunk.”
Speaking to The Sun, Bez continued: “So they get you a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey, and they always get us Guinness.

“But we’ve been drinking their lagers recently, too. It’s a piece of p*ss. We love it. You get paid for having a good laugh and getting p***ed with your mate watching the TV shows.”
Bez and Ryder are often seen with a pint of beer and an array of snacks when tuning into the biggest shows of the week, with the pair filming in Ryder’s Salford home.
Bez also revealed that he’s never watched Celebrity Gogglebox despite seven years on the show, adding: “I never watch myself on the telly because I’m always flabbergasted about how stupid I sound.
“I sound thick as f***, you know what I mean? It does my f***ing nut in and I would rather not hear it.”
The celebrity spin-off to award-winning Gogglebox also features Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness, Roman and Martin Kemp, Ashley Banjo and Perri Kiely, Nick Grimshaw and niece Liv and Rylan and his mother Linda among other stars.
A number of celebrities have joined the show for its current series, including Gladiators duo Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Nitro) and Matt Morsia (Legend) as well as Love Island’s Olivia Attwood and her mum Jennifer.

The Manchester-based musicians with a love of partying found fame with their post-punk dance group in the Eighties, performing with Ryder’s brother Paul, who died in 2022, drummer Gaz Whelan, keyboardist Paul Davis and guitarist Mark Day. Ryder is the band’s frontman, while Bez joined the band later on as a maracas player and dancer.
Despite losing and gaining band members over the years, The Happy Mondays continues to tour decades on – with fans remembering hits like 1987’s “24 Hour Party People” and “Step On” and “Kinky Afro”, which both came out three years later.
Earlier this year, Ryder revealed that neurodiversity brought the group together in the Eighties – having later been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
“When you are neurodiverse, you attract other people who are,” he said. “I would have said at the time we were all f***ed-up loonies.”
He added that Bez in particular has denied being neurodiverse, adding: “Mate, you are. The same with all of them. None of them have been tested and gone through the thing, but they are. All of them.”
