Kuala Lumpur: Celebrity preacher Haris Ismail, better known as PU Riz, has proposed that members of the public in Malaysia no longer be allowed to keep dogs as pets.
Haris expressed the view on Threads following several reported dog attacks, including a recent incident involving two-year-old Nur Haira, who was attacked by five stray dogs in Johor.
He cited religious considerations and said dogs may be kept for certain purposes, such as guarding farms, but questioned the need for them as pets in urban areas.
Haris also said he personally disliked having dogs around, whether they were strays or belonged to non-Muslim neighbours, while acknowledging that others might disagree with his view.
His remarks were a personal proposal and not an official ban, with dog ownership in Malaysia continuing to be subject to applicable local authority rules and requirements.
