Celebrity Traitors’ Maya Jama calls out ‘horrible’ Trump: ‘What’s his problem?’

Celebrity Traitors star Maya Jama has shared her stance on US President Donald Trump, branding him as “horrible” following his controversial comments about Somalians.

The American leader sparked a backlash in December last year, after saying that he did not want Somali immigrants in the US and that “their country is no good for a reason”. He told reporters at the time that they should “go back to where they came from”, and that the US would “go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country”.

Trump made the remarks shortly after federal authorities began preparing an immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, primarily targeting Somali immigrants residing unlawfully in the area.

Jama, who is part Somali and part Swedish-Scottish, gave her take on the US President’s comments, saying: “I don’t know too much about it, but I just see Trump being horrible about Somalis all the time and I’m like, ‘f***ing hell, what’s his problem?’”

Speaking to The Observer, the 32-year-old added that while she wasn’t a fan of Trump, she didn’t think it was her place to speak about politics.

“I have thought about it: ‘Who am I in this world? What do I mean to people?’” she continued. “Then I’m just like, ‘F***ing hell, I’m Maya. Just do your job and smile – keep it moving.’”

Jama has previously spoken about her Somali heritage and how she was bullied at school over it. Speaking on The Receipts Podcast in 2018, she said: “I’m half-Somali and I used to get ripped the s*** out of for that.

“Before I joined year 7, during the summer holidays or whatever, I went to some summer school club and there was these boys and they were so horrible to me because they found out I was Somalian. So when I joined year 7, and I met my classmates, I was like, ‘Yeah, ummm, I’m like Spanish and Jamaican,’ or something like that when they asked me where I was from.

“I made up a whole completely different background because I didn’t want anyone to judge me on where I was from.”

Born in Bristol, Jama began her presenting career as a teenager at Sky UK and later joined Rinse FM. She dabbled in sports presenting, covering the 2014 FIFA WOrld Cup for Copa90, and later began hosting programmes on MTV, BBC Radio 1, ITV for the Brit Awards.

In 2023, Jama became the presenter of Love Island, taking over from previous host Laura Whitmore, and two years later, she became a panelist on The Masked Singer UK.

The broadcaster is currently one of the contestants on The Celebrity Traitors, competing alongside the likes of Richard E Grant, James Acaster, Romesh Ranganathan, Bella Ramsey and Jerry Hall.
