Central Market, also commonly known by the locals as Pasar Seni, is a popular tourist spot that brims with Malaysian culture, art, craft and many delicious food outlets. I remember in the tourism management program at Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Academy then, for the course on indigenous cultural heritage & tourism entrepreneurship development, this is one of the nation's most successful repurposed heritage buildings in the heart of Kuala Lumpur that must be visited by my students. In fact, for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026, I've recommended friends & alumni from overseas to include this site visit. (https://www.tourism.gov.my)
Central Market, KL's oldest surviving marketplace was built in 1888 with significant historical value, today is the center for Malaysian culture, art and food outlets. It houses more than 350 retailing shops. A must-see destination for international travelers, tourism management students and domestic tourists. I revisited it together with my wife, Zarina and our good friend, Datin Niki Yusof to obtain latest information in case of enquiries from our overseas friends. We were excited and happy to walk around the colorful Malaysian traditional cultural environment for sight-seeing a collection of local art and handicraft. It was only 3 minutes walk from MRT - Pasar Seni Station to the Central Market complex. At the ground floor houses food stalls and restaurants offering delicious local, Asian and western cuisines to provide sustenance and cool resting places for visitors to help recuperate from the tire of shopping sprees.
I observed the indigenous uniqueness of the past Central Market has not change after all these years because most products are created by talented local artists and entrepreneurs who have mastered the art of their craft. The products mainly focus on Malaysian cultural items, including Batik, a traditional hand-drawn textile art on fabric, including wau bulans, a uniquely Malaysian kite from the East Coast, as well as cashmeer sarees and Chinese antiques.
