The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project, entailing the construction of a 6.03-km corridor connecting Koteshwar Road to the city airport at an estimated cost of Rs 2,169.04 crore.

The decision, taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will add five stations — Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport — to the network, with four stations elevated and one underground.

With the commissioning of the new stretch, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km, further strengthening urban transport connectivity in Gujarat. According to the government, the new corridor is aimed at providing seamless access to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport while linking key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient mass transit facilities.
