WE OFTEN hear that a high CGPA is the golden ticket to a successful career. But what if yours isn’t as strong as you’d hoped? Does that mean your future is doomed? Absolutely not!

The truth is, while good grades can open doors, they are not the only keys to success. Many successful people – CEOs, entrepreneurs, artists, and industry leaders – did not have perfect academic records. What mattered was their persistence, skills, and willingness to learn.

1. Focus on Skills Over Grades

Employers today care about what you can do, not just what you scored. If your grades aren’t strong, build skills that make you valuable.

Learn a Trade or Technical Skill: Courses in digital marketing, coding, graphic design, or even welding and electrical work can lead to high-paying jobs – no degree required. Browse the TVET courses online and choose a course you prefer.

Certifications: Short courses (Google Certifications, Microsoft, Coursera) add credibility to your resume.

2. Gain Real-World Experience

No employer will ignore experience. If your grades aren’t impressive, make sure your resume shows real work.

Internships (Paid/Unpaid): Even if unpaid, the experience is valuable.

Volunteer Work: NGOs and startups often need help. This builds contacts and skills.

Part-Time Jobs: Customer service, sales, or assistant roles teach soft skills employers love.

“Steve Jobs dropped out of college but learnt calligraphy, which later influenced Apple’s design. His real-world curiosity, not grades, shaped his success.”

3. Start a Business

You don’t need a degree to be an entrepreneur. Many successful business owners started small.

E-commerce: Sell products online (pic) (Shopee, Lazada, Instagram).

Content Creation: YouTube, TikTok and blogging can turn into careers.

Local Services: Tutoring, event planning, or repair services are always in demand.

“Richard Branson (Virgin Group) struggled in school due to dyslexia but built a multi-billion-dollar empire by spotting opportunities.”

4. Consider Alternative Education Paths

If traditional university isn’t working, explore other options:

Diploma & Vocational Programs: Shorter, practical, and often cheaper than degrees.

Online Degrees: Some universities offer flexible programmes.

Apprenticeships: Earn while you learn in fields like IT, healthcare, or construction.

5. Network Like Your Career Depends on It

Sometimes, who you know matters more than what you know.

Attend Industry Events: Meet professionals in your field.

LinkedIn Connections: Message people for advice (politely!).

Alumni Groups: Former students may help with job leads.

“Oprah Winfrey faced poverty and discrimination but built her career through networking and persistence.”

6. Master the Art of Selling Yourself

In interviews, shift focus from grades to strengths:

Highlight Skills: “I may not have a 4.0, but I led a team project that increased sales by 30 per cent.”

Show Growth: “I’ve taken online courses to improve my expertise in ___.”

Be Confident: If you believe in yourself, others will too.

7. Don’t Let Failure Define You

A low CGPA is just one chapter – not the whole book. Some of the world’s most successful people failed before succeeding.

“J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers before Harry Potter became a hit.”

“Einstein was called “slow” in school but changed science forever.”

“KFC’s Colonel Sanders started his business at 65 after many failures.”

Final Thought: Your Future is Still Yours to Build

Your grades do not decide your destiny – you do. If your CGPA is low, see it as a challenge, not a dead end. Work hard, stay curious, and keep moving forward. Success isn’t about where you start; it’s about how determined you are to finish.
