Chael Sonnen believes the stakes could not be higher for Chandler. The former UFC fighter has suggested that a defeat may lead to the end of his competitive career.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sonnen was clear in his assessment, stating: “Does Chandler retire if Ruffy beats him? Yes. Yes, he likely will, and I don’t know that it will be necessarily his choice.”
He then pointed to several factors that could influence that outcome, saying: “Chandler is now 38 years old. Chandler is also gainfully employed by Paramount and is going to be part of the announcing team.
“Chandler’s one of these guys that still wants to be world champion, so if he gets faced with ‘Look, that’s just not in your future.’
“At 38 years old [sic] and coming off of this defeat, I would predict he likely would say, ‘Fair enough, give my spot to somebody else.’”
The comments underline the pressure surrounding the bout. For Chandler, the fight could define whether he continues chasing a title or steps away from active competition.

Ruffy represents a challenging opponent at this stage of Chandler’s career. The Brazilian is ten years younger and has quickly built momentum in the lightweight division.
He holds a 4-1 record in the UFC and has physical advantages at the weight. His height and reach make him a difficult stylistic matchup for many opponents.
Ruffy had been on track for a potential title opportunity before a setback against Benoit Saint Denis. He responded by defeating Rafael Fiziev, re-establishing his position in the division.
Now, a win over ‘Iron’ could push him back into title contention. For Chandler, however, it is a fight that carries far greater implications about his future in the sport.
