LABUAN: The Labuan Chamber of Commerce has called for a more balanced evaluation of former Labuan Corporation Chairman Tan Sri Anifah Aman’s tenure, expressing concerns over recent media coverage that it believes may not fully reflect his contributions.
Its Chairman Daniel Doughty pointed out the importance of recognising efforts made during Anifah’s leadership, particularly in addressing long-standing local issues.
“We believe it is important to acknowledge the genuine efforts made on behalf of Labuan during this period,” he said in a statement, Monday.
He pointed out several initiatives pursued under Anifah’s leadership, including advocacy that resulted in a RM300 million allocation to address Labuan’s water supply challenges.
He also noted Anifah’s efforts to secure greater local reinvestment from the substantial revenue generated from Labuan’s economic activities.
Anifah’s public advocacy for infrastructure development, including the proposed Labuan Bridge, was also recognised by the Chamber as reflecting community concerns and priorities.
“Leadership often involves raising difficult issues and advocating for necessary changes, even when facing challenges,” Daniel said.
“We believe these efforts deserve fair recognition,” he added.
The Chamber, describing itself as an independent body focused on Labuan’s economic interests, emphasised the importance of evaluating leadership based on tangible efforts rather than political considerations.
“Our position is simply that all contributions to Labuan’s development should be assessed fairly and objectively,” said Daniel.
“We encourage constructive dialogue that focuses on Labuan’s future development needs,” he added.
He called for unity among local organisations in supporting initiatives that benefit Labuan’s long-term growth and development.
